Parts of a Tower Crane

Tower cranes enable the construction industry to build various wonderful structures. These cranes have been used to reach ever-increasing heights. Tower cranes offer the means to lift and transport tools, building parts and supplies around a construction location. There are various components which assemble a tower crane once they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes various pieces of construction machines.

Base

The tower crane base is usually made from a steel unit. The units' base attaches to a custom pad made of concrete. This kind of set-up gives the structure stability. Overall, the construction must be engineered and built well in order to operate at optimum safety.

Mast

The tower crane's mast provides the machinery with its overall height. The mast is built out of individual steel sections that are connected together. The amount of sections determines the crane's height. Normally, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding further sections as the building process continues. This way the crane's height can be specified, making certain that it has sufficient height to efficiently and safely perform the needed work.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber

A slewing unit is located at the top of the mast. This unit houses the machinery and the motor that allows the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of machinery that allows the mast to grow. The top climber sits just beneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams inside the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom

The term "boom", refers to the tower crane's working arm. The boom is made up of individual steel parts that are attached together, extending out from the top of the slewing unit and parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the base which can extend the length of the boom. This particular trolley holds the hoisting device.
