There are safety and healthy regulations governing the utilization of lift trucks. Any huge equipment, such as a forklift, is potentially dangerous and should be utilized safely. The regulations and rules state that the operator should perform daily inspections on the lift truck and more thorough checks each and every week and every month. The following checks have to be done on the forklift:
Lift Truck Brakes - the brakes are a very essential component of the forklift machinery and therefore they must be double and tripled checked. A brake check is done with different pressures and pedal heights to determine the sensitivity of the brakes. The brake lights must be checked at the same time.
The Tires - the tires are also important to the safe performance of the truck and to the braking system. All the tires must be correctly checked to ensure that there are no punctures in the tires and they are inflated to the right pressure.
Controller - In order to know whether the system is in good working condition, the lift truck controller system has to be checked by operating the forks and the release mechanism. Any indication of problems should immediately reported and tended to. The lift truck should not be utilized until the controller system has been repaired.
Steering Wheel - In order to make sure that the turning of the wheel is right, the driver must check the forklift steering wheel. Forklift safety depends on the steering wheel responding well and functioning accurately. There are different kinds of inspections that could be performed to determine steering wheel performance.
Engine Oil - the engine oil needs to be checked by removing the dip stick from the forklift engine. The dipstick would show both the level of the oil and the oil color. The oil must be refilled if the level is very low. If the colour is off, there might be contamination occurring.
Fire Extinguisher - all lift trucks are required to be equipped with a fire extinguisher. The extinguisher has to be checked to ensure it will work properly in case of a fire. Various kinds of fire extinguisher must be checked in certain ways. Like for instance, a dry chemical extinguisher must be shaken.
