There can be a range of different mechanisms that lower or raise lifts on a forklift: rack and pinion lifts, scissor lifts, screw lifts, telescoping lifts and articulated lifts. Scissor lifts use crisscrossed folding supports with a screw system utilized to draw the members together. Rack and pinion lifts use a pinion, that is a small drive gear, to drive a straight-toothed rack to lift the cargo. The telescoping lift mechanism is designed with multiple parts which retract and extend into and out of each other to attain lifting action. Screw lifts utilize threads to raise the lift. Articulated lifts utilize a mechanism involving many parts that articulate or unfold. An articulated lift example is the "cherry picker."
