Bud Bushnell established Genie Industries during the year 1966, after he bought the manufacturing rights to a material lift which functioned on compressed air. The name Genie came from the "magic in the bottle" which was utilized to lower and raise the hoist. This device greatly impressed clients and hence, the name was born.

During the initial years after the sale, it was determined to maintain the Genie brand name within the Terex Aerial Work Platforms or AWP segment of Terex, because of the name's solid reputation within the marketplace. Thus, all Genie equipment continue to be marketed under the Genie brand name.
