Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Intended for construction sites, where materials should be transported on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The correct and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is important to guarantee the wellbeing of both the driver and other workers at the work location.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are built for rough terrain, you still must be really careful in order avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed limitations, forklift drivers must drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on uneven or rough terrain needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, can be very unsafe at faster speeds.
Incline
When you are operating on a slope, you should keep the load on the equipment's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Do not attempt to lift a load if operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity could cause the machine to tip over.
Safety Devices
Operators of forklifts should always wear seat belts like any driver. Check that the overhead guard is securely in position. Depending on the working environment, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Make certain that a functioning fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift can be affected by climate. Speed, turning and load handling might need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in ice, rain or snow.
